NORMAC 9
March 9, 2025
From Thursday 6 March to Sunday 9 March, Norwich School hosted the 9th Norwich Model Arctic Council, the only standalone Model Arctic Council (MAC) for secondary schools in the world. Forty-two delegates from five schools attended (Alleyn’s School, East Norfolk Sixth Form College, Ipswich High School, the King’s School Canterbury, and Langley School), representing the eight Arctic States and six Permanent Participants that make up the Arctic Council.
Over the weekend, delegates discussed the issues of renewable energy expansion in the Arctic, as well as the Last Ice Area. Particular sticking points were seen with Russia and the United States, who were represented well by their delegations during the current geopolitical climate. Two declarations were written, but only the second, on the Last Ice Area, was eventually passed on Sunday during the Senior Arctic Official Meeting.
Outside of the diplomatic discussions, delegates took part in a welcome dinner at the Refectory and a formal dinner in the Music Room at the Assembly House, where we were honoured to hear from the Honorary Chair John Virgo, an accomplished diplomat and former UK High Commissioner for Brunei.
The Secretariat were made up of Co-Secretaries Joel Fox and Emily Hatwell, Deputy Secretary Stephanie Magusin, Chief Rapporteur Audrey Lee, Chief Administrator George Stafford, Head of Media Isla Bowles, Rapporteur Toby Adlam, Administrators Owen Laidler and Theo Chappalez, and Media Team Rose Kimber and Isio Emore.
As a Co-Secretary, I would like to thank my fellow Secretariat, the attending staff, and delegates that attended. Mostly, I would like to thank Director Dr Speca and Deputy Director Mr White for giving us all such a unique opportunity to better understand one of the fastest changing regions in the world.
- Emily Hatwell
