Aims of Sport at Norwich School

To inspire pupils to love sport, exercise and movement throughout their lives.

To achieve this, we will be guided by the three principles of PARTICIPATION; PREPARATION and PERFORMANCE

"Welcome to the online home of Norwich School’s Sport. Here, you will find out about the breathtaking range of sporting opportunities that can be accessed in the Senior School to help create a life-long love of sport, exercise and movement.

I strongly believe that regular participation in sport and exercise are central to living a long, happy and healthy life. I also understand that we are all different and come to sport with different levels of motivation, skill or simply time. This is why our sports programme is based on the principles of “Participation; Performance and Preparation” and is designed to offer progressive opportunities and experiences for all. This starts in L4 and U4 with a team sports leading to inter-school fixtures plus a “physical education” (PE) rotation that blends physical literacy with new experiences for all pupils. As pupils grow, we increase the choice at L5 to offer rowing, sailing and kayaking along with dance, orienteering and tennis, which may appeal to those more interested in individual, crew/partnered and outdoor sports. This choice expands still further at U5 and into sixth form where over 20 sports are offered throughout the year.

Our programme comprises a weekly timetabled sessions for all pupils in all year groups; a programme of extra-curricular sport-specific coaching sessions, all complimented by lunchtime and after-school sports clubs, which run through the year and provide many opportunities to enjoy sport and progress.

The Sport and Outdoor Education Department comprises  a team of highly competent, motivated and passionate sports teachers and coaches whose aim it is to develop a life-long love of sport for all pupils whether they are the reluctant pupil who is finding their way to the sport that excites them or the talented specialist, who we will support to become best they can be either through our Sports Scholars programme or the external talent development pathways with whom we work closely.

In these web-pages you will find sport-specific information along with detailed policy information and guidance in our “Pupil and Parent Guide to Senior School Sport”, linked below. Information on our outdoor education programme can be found in the Co-Curricular section of the website linked here.

I look forward to watching our pupils have fun and progress in their sporting endeavours, whatever they may be and hope they learn to....

Love sport, always!"

On Sunday 4 May, the Senior rowers raced at Wallingford Regatta, held at Dorney Lake on the 2000m Olympic course. The conditions were challenging with a strong cross wind but all crews handled them well. The Boys 1st VIII raced as Open and Schools, finshing in the top half of the Junior 8s, despite some last minute crew changes. The Girls 1st VIII, with seven of them being J16, raced in the J18 8s and 4s. The 1st Four missed the repechage by 0.25 second, finishing 7th overall and the 2nd Four raced well holding Bedford Girls to only a 3 second deficit. The Boys Quad had a tough heat, but learnt a lot about multi lane racing. Well done to all crews. Meanwhile, Nicholas Conway, had been selected to race for Great Britain Under 19s at Munich International Junior Regatta. With a very close race in the Coxless Four final on Saturday, the crew won a Silver Medal. They then raced the Czech Republic in an 8 in the last race of the day. A strong second 1000m saw the 8 come from a length down to win Gold. The Sunday saw the 8 racing again. With a much bigger field, Nick and his crew won their heat, setting up a final with 3 German crews, Croatia and the Czech Republic. A strong race saw the 8 win Gold by half a length to the selected German crew. With 2 Golds and 1 Silver medal, this was a fantastic start to Nicholas’ U19 International racing

The 1st XI faced Gresham’s in a 45-over match. After losing the toss, they batted first and built a strong foundation with a 94-run opening stand between Anish Kantam (44) and Ollie Longdon (36). Tom Robson controlled the innings with a composed 72, supported by Lewis Reeder’s brisk 40, taking the total to 278/6. Gresham’s started confidently in reply, putting us under pressure early on. However, two run outs and a key wicket from debutant Tom Bush turned the momentum. Jack Rowley finished with 3/54 as the team secured a convincing 62-run victory.

Rowing Report: Inter Regional Regatta and GB Trials On Saturday, 10 J15 and J16 rowers raced at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, representing the Eastern Region at the Junior Inter Regional Regatta. They competed against 13 other regions covering England, Scotland and Wales. Following the 1000m Time Trials, all crews reached the A Finals where the top 6 Regions from each time trial would race side by side over 1500m. The Girls J15 Coxed 4 of Harriet Brightwell, Freya Dixon, Hannah Conway, Baye Reynolds and Izi Mayhew moved up one place to finish 4 th. Charlotte Douglas and Amelie Ivie raced the Womens J16 Pair, and having tied with a crew in the TIme Trial they had a close race finishing 4 th by just a second. Ellie Thwaites had gained her selection as the fastest J16 Eastern Sculler and with 2 scullers selected she again came out as the 1 st Sculler for the Eastern Region, securing her a place in the A FInal. A 6 th place finish for Ellie placed her amongst some well established Scullers from across the UK. The penultimate race of the day was James Howard and Joseph Hawkes in the J16 Pair, and with 4 crews neck and neck down the course and the boys pushing to keep their bows in front the last 250m saw real tussle for the line. A mere 0.2 seconds separated the boys from the winning Thames London crew and achieving a well deserved Silver medal. On Sunday, Daniel White and Nicholas Conway were also racing at HolmePierrpont in the GB U19 Spring Trials Regatta, with all rowers who had progressed through the selection process with their ergo scores and February trials results. The trials followed a Regatta format with Heats, Semis and Finals. Daniel, along with his Latymer crew finished 30 th overall. Nicholas, despite his pairs partner from Shiplake College, only being confirmed on Saturday, had some great results early in the day to reach the A Final. A phonemonal race saw Nicholas finish as the 2 nd pair in Great Britain. Well done to both boys, and we wish them well in the next stage of the Trials process in July – the Crew Formation - to decide on crews for World and European Championships.
