An animated creative journey in the Blake Studio
November 6, 2024
We were delighted to welcome back on site the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society (n-cas) for the latest in their impressive series of public lectures. The creative talk in the Blake Studio on 6 November 2024 focussed on the fascinating and burgeoning industry around the medium of animation.
Our evening’s expert was Jon Dunleavy, course lead in animation at the Norwich University of the Arts and professional short film animator, whose work has featured at festivals, on the BBC and on Channel 4.
The talk began with a canter thought the history of the medium including early Disney works, stop-motion, the innovative contributions from Pixar and Dreamworks studios and the amazing CGI realms of films such as Avatar. The speaker then considered how students of the medium have amazing transferrable skills that can be used in associated industries such as marketing, augmented reality and many ground-breaking creative fields. Looking at the incredible complexity of the technical side to animated films, Jon gave examples of how beauty, natural inspirations and comedy can be used for great effect and Jon gave helpful insights to budding animators on the need to consider strong ideas, appealing poses, compelling movement and appealing aesthetics to create works of power and wonder. Jon’s award-winning work can be readily viewed here: Jon Dunleavy. An appreciative audience of n-cas members, staff, pupils, ONs and local creatives enjoyed an informative Q&A and chatting to Jon about his work over refreshments afterwards.
