Med Soc Invites ONs to Discuss the Journey Into Medicine
November 5, 2024
"On Tuesday 5th November, U5, L6 and U6 pupils interested in careers in medicine gathered in the Blake studio to listen to two speakers, Dr. Jamie Mather (ON), and Dr. Ashley Raghu (ON). During the first half of the afternoon, Dr. Mather spoke to pupils about his day-to-day life as a FY1 doctor, the pros and cons of becoming a doctor, and the various pathways available to get into medicine after finishing your Norwich School journey, which was extremely informative and encouraging. Following this, we were lucky to hear from Dr. Raghu, who spoke to us virtually from New York. He discussed with us his individual journey into medicine, and his life now as a neurologist living in Manhattan, a rewarding lifestyle which comes with 100 hour weeks of work! To end the afternoon, Dr. Mather spoke to us about the allied healthcare career opportunities available as an alternative to becoming a doctor, ranging from physiotherapy to paramedicine, widening the range of careers for pupils to consider. Dr. Mather ended with a Q&A, answering pupils’ questions specifically tailored to their age and what they should aim to be doing to prepare for the journey ahead."

Norwich School support for pupils applying for highly competitive courses continued yesterday when all pupils who have just applied through UCAS to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine each had six practice mini interviews in the OMR. The format mirrored the MMI format that most universities now use for these courses, but each interview concluded with the pupils being giving feedback on how to improve. We wish all these pupils well as the invitations to actual interviews start to come through.
