November 2, 2024
Over October half term, 29 pupils from M5 to U6 ventured to Iceland for a thrilling four-day encounter with the island’s breathtaking landscapes. From cascading waterfalls to steaming geothermal springs, each destination delivered unforgettable moments and awe-inspiring views.
Our journey began with a visit to the Bridge Between the Continents, where students stood between two tectonic plates—a stunning reminder of Iceland's dynamic geology. The group then trekked across the Stampar Craters and witnessed the steam-filled Gunnuhver Hot Springs, surrounded by otherworldly mud pools and geothermal vents. To cap off the day, we visited the Grindavík lava field, site of recent volcanic activity, where pupils could see the true impact of living in a tectonically active area.
Day 2 started at the Lava Centre, a remarkable display of Iceland’s volcanic history and seismic power. From there, we visited the magnificent Skógafoss Waterfall—all 460 steps to the top were worth the view! A thrilling glacier walk at Sólheimajökull followed, where students traversed an icy wonderland and took in the surreal, unending views. We ended with Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall so unique it allowed us to walk behind its cascade for a truly magical experience.
Day 3, a highlight-packed day, started at Gullfoss Waterfall, where sheets of water thundered into a dramatic canyon. The adventure continued at Geysir, with towering eruptions captivating everyone. A sweet stop at the Efsti-dalur II Ice Cream Farm delighted students with unique local flavours – including liquorice! Later, snorkelling at Silfra in Þingvellir National Park, we drifted between continents in crystal-clear water—a surreal, otherworldly experience.
Our final day began with a scenic tour of Reykjavik before heading to FlyOver Iceland, a thrilling virtual flight over Iceland’s landscapes. We then went to the Sky Lagoon, where warm geothermal waters, a six-step spa ritual and ocean views left us all in awe, and concluded at the Raufarhólshellir Lava Tube, winding through ancient lava formations — a perfect end to an extraordinary journey!
Each day in Iceland revealed new wonders, leaving us with memories of an unforgettable adventure.
