The Alarming Impact of Climate Change on Africa’s Fragile Ecosystem
October 17, 2024
Thursday 17 October saw us welcome back on site the illustrious Royal Geographical Society (RGS) for the East of England. Norwich School’s Blake Studio acts as their hub for their fascinating series of informative lectures.
Highly respected scientists Jeff Price and Ellie Harris from the renowned Tyndall Centre at the UEA gave a lecture to a very engaged audience on The Iconic Places and Species of Africa and their Future.
Professor Jeff Price, leader of the Humboldt Initiative for Sustainable Ecosystems and Livelihoods, and researcher Ellie Harris, also from UEA’s Tyndall Centre, examined the projected impacts of climate change on some of the iconic places and species of Africa, especially the pernicious effects of prolonged drought. Ther findings inevitably made very sobering listening as this fragile ecosystem struggles to adapt to the rapid effects of global warming.
Jeff and Ellie considered how species are likely to fare, considering the climatologic effects on such iconic places as the Serengeti, the Okavango, Kilimanjaro, the Kruger National park and the Mountains of the Moon. Their fascinating exploration considered the fate of key species such as elephants, lions and gorillas. Ellie focused specifically on the different species of giraffe, many of which are already endangered, and the challenging conservation implications of maintaining giraffe populations.
