Norfolk Maths Symposium 2024
November 7, 2024
On Tuesday 7 November 2024, over 250 school children from 10 schools across the region gathered at The Space in Norwich for the Norfolk Maths Symposium.
The event is free for attendees and the only one of its kind in the region, acting as an opportunity for keen mathematicians from around the county to listen, take part and feel inspired by maths outside the classroom.
Pupils were treated to lectures on probability and risk from Alison Kiddle, including an incredible re-telling of her time on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, a fascinating explanation of the Lorenz WWII code-breaking machine and what it has in common with a Taylor Swift CD from James Grime (of Numberphile fame) and Zoe Elliott’s demonstrations of moebious loops and beautiful (mathematical) smoke rings above the audience’s heads. It really was a very engaging morning.
The school was grateful to receive support from several donors in order to run the event and make it free for attendees; The Norwich Freemen's Charity, The Educational Foundation of Alderman John Norman, The C L Hill and Lady Hind Trusts, The John Jarrold Trust, The Paul Bassham Trust and The Norfolk Cambridge Society.
Started in 2016 the Maths Symposium has now greeted approximately 2500 pupils from Norfolk and beyond and welcomed some incredible speakers!
