The Year of the Snake!
January 31, 2025
This has been a big week in the lunar calendar. Tuesday was New Year’s Eve as the Chinese speaking world made its final preparations for the Year of the Snake. On Wednesday and Thursday, Norwich School welcomed the Year of the Snake with an assembly for the Senior and Lower Schools.
During both assemblies, we learnt about the significance of the snake in Chinese culture and about what snakes are really like. They are far removed from the toxic, slithery, slimy creatures feared by many people but are recognised for their keen insight and extraordinary intelligence. The snake is also considered the most tenacious of the 12 zodiac animals, but also enigmatic and in some cases ruthless in the pursuit of their own aims.
Norwich School is fortunate to have a whole cohort of snakes born in 2013 who are water snakes. We hope they will live up to the best sides of this noble creature of the Chinese zodiac. We want all our young snakes to be like the Chinese snake, intelligent, creative, and artistic. They are also known for being determined, courageous, and confident. The School is also lucky enough have a few wise snakes on the teaching and support staff who serve as role models to us all.
There are many ways to wish a Happy New Year in Chinese.
蛇舞春风,万事如意! - As the snake dances in the spring breeze, may all your wishes come true.
蛇行千里,事业辉煌展! As the snake travels a thousand miles, may your career shine bright.
Kung Hei Fat Choy!
Gong Xi Fa Cai!
新年好
恭喜发财
