‘Beware of men in grey suits bearing gifts’ – the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society returns to Norwich School
September 19, 2024
For many years Norwich School has developed an extremely fertile partnership with the Norfolk Contemporary Arts Society (n-cas), as part of our commitment to public cultural activities in The Close. This has included welcoming them with regularity to the school’s Crypt Gallery as well as hosting them at frequent and well-supported public lectures in the Blake Studio. On 19th September 2024, we were delighted to welcome them back for their inaugural lecture of the new academic year.
A large audience of n-cas members, staff, ONs and Norwich creatives heard acclaimed glass sculptor David Reekie lecture on his work, methods and influences. Following the rich British tradition for caricature from Hogarth, Cruikshank, Gillray and Scarfe, David Reekie’s work comprises a broad array of politically satirical and humorous sculptures and drawings. His work reflects the major societal changes and struggles that have taken place during his life: Britain’s industrial decline, the rise of the big brother state, and, more recently, polemicised political discourse. This is amply reflected in a large body of meticulously created, thought-provoking and visually appealing pieces of exquisite glasswork. His work spans the period from Thatcher to Johnson, including such works as ‘Beware of men in grey suits bearing gifts’ a comical work depicting sinister, leering autocrats promising unlikely give-aways to curry favour. David concluded his fascinating talk with detailed descriptions of how his amazing works are lovingly crafted including the complex, high temperature kiln processes that mean it takes many days to create such intricate, colourful and fragile works.
During the Q&A and over refreshments, David generously gave of his time and experience to help budding creative talents.
Our upcoming cultural events this Michaelmas Term can all be found outlined in our publication At Close Quarters. See: Publications | Norwich School (norwich-school.org.uk).
Our next public talks in the Blake Studio are on 16th October where we will hear from respected art gallery curator Richard Calvocoressi CBE (see: Events — ncas (n-cas.org.uk)) and on the following night - 17th October - from the Royal Geographical Society where we will hear from two members of the UEA’s world-renowned Tyndall Centre on the impacts of climate change on iconic places and species in Africa (see: The iconic places and species of Africa and their future - RGS). That same night (17th October) also features a special piano recital from international pianist Tyler Hay in the Chapel: An Evening With Piano Virtuoso, Tyler Hay. All are welcome to any of these events.
