A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols Delights a Packed Cathedral
December 8, 2024
For those in our huge congregation of pupils, parents, staff, Governors, alumni, city dignitaries and friends who like their Carols Services traditional, the annual Norwich School Carol Service on 8th December did not disappoint. However, those liking a few innovations were also thrilled to see this year the introduction of a selection of different carols, a liberal smattering of latin, some very dinky hand bells and a thunderous brass and timpani accompaniment to raise the decibel count still higher.
It is always an unbridled joy for the whole senior school to gather en masse to sing with one voice and to raise the roof at this much-anticipated event.
Under the direction of Mrs Walton, the choir kicked off proceedings with an ethereal Gregorian Chant at the west doors as the cathedral lights were lowered and candles were lit amongst the congregation to create a truly magical atmosphere. Carols old and new were interspersed with well-known readings delivered by pupils and members of staff, a parent and a Governor. Festive choral interludes came courtesy of the Cathedral Choristers, the Chapel Choir and Junior Choir.
All too soon the Dean was giving his blessing, Hark the Herald bellowed out and Storm Darragh greeted the congregation as they processed to the cosy warmth of the refectory for mince pies and mulled wine afterwards.
The grateful thanks of the whole school community go to all our organisers, readers, talented young singers, and of course to Mrs Walton and Mr Stamp for leading music of an exceptional beauty and majesty.
