Sign Language Continues to Flourish
April 13, 2026
Thanks to the Friends of Norwich School, our BSL offering has grown with even more pupils involved and closer relationships with the Deaf community.
Project Overview
Following the successful approval of the British Sign Language (BSL) Club bid, the project has made strong progress towards its core aim: to establish and grow BSL provision across both Lower and Senior Schools while promoting inclusivity, communication skills, and engagement with the Deaf community.
The initiative has successfully delivered regular teaching, increased pupil participation, and created meaningful community links, in line with the original objectives.
Senior School BSL Club
The Senior School BSL Club has continued to run as a weekly co-curricular activity, with an average attendance of approximately 14 pupils per session.
Pupils have developed foundational conversational skills in BSL through structured and engaging sessions. Topics covered include:
- Fingerspelling
- Numbers
- Emotions and feelings
- Family members
- School topics
- Work and hobbies
- Weather
Seasonal sessions have further enriched learning, including themed activities for Halloween and Christmas. Pupils also participated in additional sessions to learn BSL for well-known songs such as Fairytale of New York and Rocking Around the Christmas Tree, providing opportunities to apply their skills creatively and performatively.
CPD-Accredited Course Engagement
A key objective of the bid was to expand access to the CPD-accredited online BSL course. This has seen positive uptake:
- 8 new enrolments this academic year
- 27 active enrolments in total
- 2 pupils have successfully completed their certificates since September 2024
This demonstrates clear progress towards providing formal recognition and structured progression pathways for pupils. A detailed breakdown of pupil progress is included in Appendix A.
Lower School BSL Club
The Lower School BSL Club has been successfully launched and runs weekly as a lunchtime activity.
Pupils have been introduced to core BSL skills, including:
- Signing their name
- Colours
- Animals
- Family members
Sessions have been highly engaging, supported by resources purchased through the bid, including flashcards and interactive games. These have played a key role in embedding early enthusiasm and participation, supporting the project’s aim of introducing BSL from a young age.
Community Engagement and Deaf Awareness
Developing links with the Deaf community has been a central success of the project.
A coffee morning event was held on Friday 20th March, attended by six members of Deaf Connexions, alongside pupils from both Lower and Senior School clubs. Hosted in the Crypt Gallery, the event provided an opportunity for pupils to:
- Showcase their BSL skills
- Engage in authentic communication
- Build confidence and cultural awareness
This event aligned with Sign Language Week, reinforcing its educational impact and relevance. It successfully strengthened relationships with the Deaf community and promoted greater awareness across the school.
There are plans to host a further event in the Summer Term, making use of the remaining budget and continuing to build on this success.
Wider Opportunities and Partnerships
The club has also been approached by Able2B to participate in a summer event. This will involve:
- Collaboration between mainstream pupils and SEN children/adults
- Shared learning experiences
- A planned performance of a song using BSL
This opportunity strongly supports the project’s aims around inclusivity, collaboration, and real-world application of BSL skills.
Impact Summary
The project has already demonstrated clear impact in several key areas:
- Increased pupil engagement in co-curricular learning
- Development of practical communication skills in BSL
- Successful introduction of BSL in the Lower School
