An Update on the PPD Curriculum

The PPD curriculum this half term is focusing on healthy decisions for our bodies, as well as healthy relationships. Here are some ideas of what you could be talking to your children about, as well as some useful resources expanding on these issues.

Lower 4 – This half term Lower 4 have been engaging in 'Drugs and Alcohol'. Questions to ask your child include:

  • Caffeine is a naturally occurring stimulant. How does it affect the body?
  • What are the side effects of too much caffeine?
  • Energy drinks can contain caffeine but usually also contain a lot of..........?
  • What are the common influences on young people's decision making?

Upper 4 - Upper 4 have been learning about 'Drugs and Alcohol.' Ask your child:

  • What is the difference between medicinal drugs and recreational drugs?
  • What are the short-term effects of alcohol consumption?
  • What are the long-term effects of smoking?

Lower 5 have been learning about 'Respectful Relationships'.  Discussion points can focus on:

  • Different types of family structures.
  • How and why has family life changed over the past century in the UK?
  • What does effective conflict management look like?
  • What are 'healthy' and 'unhealthy' relationship qualities?

Next half term M5 will have a Relationship and Sex Education session, more information to follow. They will also have as session with our visiting speaker, Satveer Nijjar, on self- harm awareness, Wednesday 14 June.

The aim of the session is to build confidence around the subject of self-harm by reducing stigma, anxiety and fear –  Attention Seekers? – Bespoke self-harm awareness training (satveernijjar.com)

There will also be an in-person parent session 17:00-18:30 on Wednesday 14 June. More information to follow.
