Little Roots Flourishes Thanks to FONS
March 10, 2026
The Little Roots allotment at the Lower School has enjoyed a wonderful boost this year thanks to a generous grant from the Friends of Norwich School.
FONS support has enabled the space to literally ‘grow’ and become a more vibrant, engaging, and educational environment for the Lower School gardeners.
The funding has been used across the allotment, and a range of resources have been purchased that will benefit pupils in the following terms:
1. Child friendly tools and equipment
New smaller gardening gloves, bulb planters, watering cans, and fleece hoops have made gardening more accessible for younger pupils while helping to protect the raised beds from frost and the occasional inquisitive pigeon.
2. A new cold frame
This valuable addition provides a sheltered space for seedlings to harden off after leaving the potting shed, protecting tender plants from cold winds and helping them gradually adjust to outdoor conditions.
3. Plants for the new pollinator bed
Dahlia tubers and a selection of other, pollinator friendly perennial plants have been purchased and will soon be added to our new pollinator bed, designed to encourage and support bees, butterflies, and other vital wildlife.
4. Materials for site improvements
Wood has been bought to build a fence to supporting the new dead hedge which will provide vital habitat for insects and wildlife. A new gate for the allotment was partly funded by the grant. This was not initially budgeted for, but it became a necessity as the wildlife camera showed the allotment had been receiving regular visits from a particularly enthusiastic local fox, who enjoyed digging for worms! Also deer had been visiting and gave the new honeysuckle plant a drastic haircut!
5. Compost for healthy growing
The grant also funded 15 bags of compost, essential for topping up the raised beds and keeping soil levels healthy throughout the year.
6. Additional plants which give the allotment permanent structure
Some money was used to provide plants such as raspberries, blackberries, as well as a honeysuckle and jasmine to grow over the arch at the entrance to the allotment. Bulbs such as alliums, daffodils and tulips have been planted in new pots and ground beds to provide spring colour.
A Space for Every Pupil
This generous support has truly enabled the allotment to flourish. Most importantly, it has ensured that all Lower School pupils can access, enjoy, and learn from the garden—whether they are planting seeds, observing wildlife, or proudly harvesting their first crops. The Friends’ contribution is helping to nurture not only plants, but curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Friends of Norwich School for their continued support and for helping Little Roots grow.
