LARGE AUDIENCE ENTHRALLED BY RUSSIA TODAY TALK
October 3, 2022
On Friday 30 September, we were delighted to welcome the Norfolk Cambridge Society back to Norwich School for the 14th public lecture in their series given by distinguished academics and hosted on site here.
Dr Bridget Kendall (Russia expert, Master of Peterhouse College Cambridge, former BBC Moscow correspondent and senior BBC Diplomatic correspondent) gave an engrossing assessment entitled Russia Today, based on her lifetime’s experience covering this complex country’s relations with the West post the end of the Cold War.
Her talk could not have been more apt in light of President Putin’s annexation of four more areas of Ukraine only earlier that day and her material was right up to date. Our speaker led us through the origins of the conflict with Ukraine, the background to the unexpected decision to launch the offensive in February of this year and an assessment of how Putin is contending with spirited Ukrainian resistance.
Having conducted two long interviews with President Vladimir Putin in 2001 and 2006, both broadcast live to the world from inside the Kremlin, Dr Kendall was well positioned to give an array of personal insights into the President’s character and his inner circle. She closed by commenting on likely next steps, as Russian forces become mired in a conflict very different from the one envisaged when launched in the spring.
A particularly animated Q&A session ensued with Dr Kendall deftly fielding questions, including very moving reflections from a Ukrainian mother, currently residing in Norfolk and finding a new life here with her daughter and elderly mother, whose home city of Mariupol was completely decimated, turning their life upside down.
The audience of pupils, parents, alumni, staff and a large Norfolk Cambridge Society contingent from around Norfolk were given the opportunity to carry on discussions with Dr Kendall over refreshments.
Looking forward, a real treat awaits us on 26 January 2023, when Norfolk’s distinguished son and Nobel prize winner Sir Paul Nurse presents the 15th lecture on What Is Life? hosted by Norwich School. A leading international geneticist, Sir Paul has spent a lifetime pondering the wonder and complexity of existence and aims to distil his eminent scholarship into a one-hour lecture. We simply could not have a better guide on this topic. Tickets are priced £15, discounted to £12 until 30 November, £10 for senior citizens and £5 for pupils. For tickets please email: geoffreyjnsmart@gmail.com. The Norfolk Cambridge Society is inclusive and open to all with an interest in the rigorous pursuit of the truth.
