Air Raid Shelter Open to Visitors
September 19, 2025
As part of Heritage Open Days we were delighted to open the Air Raid Shelter and Norwich School Chapel to visitors this month.

Norwich School is extremely fortunate to be located on a site rich in heritage and interest and, for many years, we have been delighted to participate in Norfolk’s Heritage Open Day scheme.
Once again this September, we opened our Chapel and our Air Raid Shelter to the public. The beautiful medieval Chapel dates back to 1316, has proud regal connections, interesting graffiti and windows, two war memorials and an organ with a fascinating back story.
The Air Raid shelter beneath the playground offers a totally unique opportunity to descend underground and into the history of the Cathedral Close during the height of the bombing raids of World War II.
A recent visitor to the bomb shelter told us: 'Thanks to the Heritage Open Day I was given the rare opportunity to go below the playground at Norwich School and visit the air raid shelter - something I didn't know existed until quite recently. It was an amazing experience and gave me some idea of what it would have been like down there back in wartime.'
If you 'd like to visit us in 2026, look out for the booking links on the Heritage Open Day website. We look forward to welcoming you.
