The Glitz and Glamour of The Great Gatsby
July 1, 2024
As we approached the end of Gather24 , the Seniors took on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby in the unusual setting of Norwich School’s picturesque Quad. The piece was incredibly immersive, with characters greeting you at the door, managing a makeshift cocktail bar and walking freely around the space in conversation – meaning that from the moment you entered the space you felt like you were in a 20s jazz bar.
The Great Gatsby tells the story of millionaire Jay Gatsby (Dylan Parsons) and his pursuit if his lost love Daisy Buchanan (Jemima Curtis). The tale is told from the perspective of Nick Carraway (William Clarke) and Nick’s ability to quickly shift between past and present is integral to the show, which William executed perfectly. All the actors gave exceptional performances and showcased the complexity of their characters with skill and artistic flair.
The glitz and glamour of the roaring 20s was reflected in style of the production, particularly in the costuming and hair and makeup of each and every character. The musical interlude’s were also a wonderful addition to the show as a whole, with audience members enthralled throughout. The performances were well and truly spectacles, there was something going on in all angles, at the same time, this was their space and we were invited in.
