The 2024 Michaelmas Concert
December 4, 2024
Once again the King’s Centre was the venue to host our annual Michaelmas Concert. A wide variety of groups and styles were on display, showing off the capabilities of the pupils and their music group leaders. This event is a showcase of what many of the groups have been preparing over the Michaelmas term and provides a wonderful opportunity for performers of all year groups to join with family, staff and guests to put of a stellar show. Some highlights include the sublime second movement of Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony with its famous opening horn solo played by L6 music scholar Melissa Hawkings.
The training orchestra, Sinfonia, also showed great promise with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Christmas classic, Waltz of the Flowers. A particularly notable part of this item was the dazzling opening harp solo performed by L4 music scholar Timothy Madders. If It Ain’t Baroque made their debut in this performance, playing all three movements of J.S. Bach’s challenging concerto for Oboe (Alena Lai M5) and Violin (Isaac Schaad) in Dm – they were joined by an equally strong gathering of music scholars as well as Mr O’Toole and Mrs Fry. Posy Walton and Mr Collerton also prepared many a choral treat – these juxtaposed with the colourful tones of the Senior Jazz Band, Uberbeat, Saxology, Guitar Ensemble and Cello Ensemble made for quite the musical extravaganza.
Well done all!
