Simon Kirby
Dr Kirby joined Norwich School in 2014, as Second in Maths, before becoming the Head of Maths in 2016. Taking both his BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Meteorology and PhD Mathematics (Fluid Dynamics) at UEA, his eye turned to teaching as a way to keep solving equations and to bestow a love of the subject on others in a way that would offer deeper understanding of what really is going on, over superficial (and useless!) techniques. Anything calculus based is what really drove his initial interests in the subject – and still does – but he believes that sometimes, there is nothing like visualising areas of shapes through simple manipulations, spotting patterns or considering negative numbers by adding and removing profits and debts. Dr Kirby is also the founder of the Norfolk Maths Symposium - an event for all pupils in Norfolk Schools to experience maths beyond the classroom. He really enjoys cryptic crosswords, pike fishing and developing a standup comedy routine.
