Taking Positive Action

Many of you may be familiar with Bystander Intervention Training and indeed may have taken part in or organised it for your own places of work.

The concept of being an 'upstander' is something we very much encourage amongst our own pupils and staff, and it is an important part of a whole school culture of safeguarding.

We talk about the importance of taking that step towards someone who may be being treated unfairly, rather than taking a step away, and we aim to reinforce these messages on a regular basis through staff training, our assembly programme, our tutorial materials and in our PPD lessons.

There are a number of different forms intervention can take and it is important to consider which is safest and which we feel most comfortable with. UEA use the 5Ds with students there (distraction, direct action, delegation, delay and document) and I share the practical example of 'distraction' - this could be applied to any number of situations, and you may find it interesting to discuss at home sometime.
