Pupils Learn the Benefits of Safety and Wellbeing With an Emphasis on Online Safety

This term in PPD pupils have been learning about safety and wellbeing...

Lower 4 – This half term Lower 4 have been engaging in 'Developing Skills and Aspirations'. Questions to ask your child include:

  • Why is a growth mindset important?
  • Can you think of a time you have been resilient? What healthy copying strategies did you use?
  • Is perfectionism a positive thing? Why/why not?

Upper 4 have been learning about 'Online Life and Safety Online.' Ask your child:

  • What impact using Instagram might have on someone's a) self-esteem and b) the way people are spending their time?
  • How might they use social media safely?
  • What might some of the warning signs of an online groomer be?

Lower 5 have been learning about 'healthy lifestyles'.  Discussion points can focus on:

  • How does exercise contribute to positive emotional wellbeing?
  • What are the health and cognitive benefits of good quality sleep?
  • What are the health problems caused by too much sugar?

Middle 5 had a talk on 'Youth Produced Imagery and the Law'. We shared the following case study. You could ask your child what the consequences might be for both young people:

'If a 15-year-old male pupil is in a relationship with a 14-year-old female pupil and she sends him a photograph during that relationship of herself topless, she has committed a criminal offence and so has he.'

Consequences:

Female pupil – even though it is of herself, she has committed the offence of making an indecent image of an child because she is under 18-years-old.

Male pupil – By having possession of that photograph from his girlfriend, he is in possession of an indecent image of a child and has committed an offence.

It is worth noting that Norfolk Police would not normally criminalise children under 18 who take indecent images of themselves. However, it is still a criminal offence and could be recorded.

This half term, Upper 5 pupils have had/will have an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion tutorial with our EDI officer, Amber Scott. Please ask your son/daughter what the session was about and what was discussed.
