Norwich School Choral Society to join forces with musicians from acclaimed local ensemble Norwich Baroque

Norwich School Choral Society are joining forces in March 2023 with musicians from acclaimed local ensemble Norwich Baroque. The repertoire for the 2022-23 season will include Antonio Vivaldi’s short but vibrant Magnificat in G minor (RV 610), Gabriel Faure’s infamous Requiem in D Minor (Op. 48) and a brand-new commission A Mass for Planet Earth by Andrew Weeks, Head of Instrumental Music & Composition at the school and an emerging choral and commercial media composer.

We are looking forward to welcoming Adam Chillingworth in Year 13 to perform J.S. Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto no.5 in F minor, (BWV 1056). Adam is a promising young musician who will undoubtably be a name to watch in the coming years.

The concert will take place at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich on Wednesday 8th March at 7.30pm - book your tickets here. The choir is one of the largest in the region. The ages of the singers range between 14 and 92 years old!

In addition to the musical support of the choir, the concert offers young, advanced instrumentalists from across the region the opportunity to perform alongside Norwich Baroque. The scheme is open to any Grade 7+ orchestral players. Musicians from Norwich Baroque will lead orchestral workshops in February for those playing in the March concert. Also welcome are singers from other schools. They will be coached by the choir’s music staff in a series of Friday afternoon rehearsals between January and March. Interested parties should contact music@norwich-school.org.uk.

Norwich Baroque was founded in 2007 by a group of friends who were curious about the music of the 18th century, and their spirit of exploration and community continues to guide our work today. Over the past 15 years, we have built collaborative relationships with some of the top musicians working in historically informed performance (HIP), such as Rachel Podger, Michael Chance, and Carolyn Sampson, with programming that pairs international favourites like Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi with lesser-known creative voices from the past – especially those with a local connection, like John Playford.

Formed in 1983, Norwich School Choral Society remains one of the largest choruses in the region. Each year, the Society joins with pupils from the School’s Chapel Choir to give a performance in St Andrew’s Hall, as well as an evensong at Norwich Cathedral. Norwich School also has a long history of nurturing young instrumentalists; senior players from the School will perform at this concert alongside Norwich Baroque.
