Mind the Gap: Meet Caitlin Obee

In our Mind the Gap series we take the time to get to know a little bit more about our Gap Students and Graduate Assistants, and we are delighted to hear from Caitlin Obee (ON 16-18).

Last year, Caitlin was the Graduate Music Assistant, having attended Norwich School herself from 2016-18. She is now studying for a PGCE in the music department. After deciding to go into teaching, Caitlin felt this position at Norwich School provided her the perfect way to enter the teaching profession gradually, at a school which she knew well.

Before getting the job at Norwich School, Caitlin studied music for three years at Clare College, Cambridge. She was a choral scholar in the college choir which gave her the opportunity to travel to some amazing places across the world, including Europe, North and Central America and South-east Asia.

Caitlin loved being the music gap student last year, especially due to the huge variety of activities in the music department - one minute she would be teaching an A-level lesson on Mozart opera or taking a L4 lesson with ukuleles, and the next she would be conducting the Symphonic Wind Band or moving drumkits around the school site in the buggy!

Caitlin says the best thing about working at Norwich School is getting to know the talented pupils. In particular, she enjoyed conducting the newly founded Chamber Choir and directing the junior and intermediate musical, The Twits. She does point out, however, that Refectory lunches come a close second as a perk of the job!

Reflecting on her own years at Norwich School, Caitlin remembers performing the Chaminade Flute Concerto with the London Mozart Players in St. Andrews Hall during her final year of school as a favourite moment.
