Inaugural Parent Forum Generates Positive Discussions

Earlier this term we held our first Parent Forum in the Refectory, we had good attendance from a diverse body of parents (thank you to those of you who gave up your time to join us!) and felt that it created a helpful space to share questions and views.

To summarise, some of the key points of discussion were as follows:

School Uniform (from Nicole Reynolds, Assistant Bursar)

  • A full review of uniform is underway, including the Lower School
  • We are moving towards having a neutral set of items for both school uniform and sports kit
  • Netball dresses were discussed, and we will investigate what School Blazer can offer in this area so that they can be more easily available throughout the year
  • Blue blazer skirts were raised as a concern in terms of comfort and design - we have now sourced a better material from School Blazer and are also open minded to seeking a range of other styles to consider
  • The price of pin skirts and trousers is now in line with the tie uniform
  • New fitness leggings and sports shorts designed for a female body will shortly be available.

Equity in Sport (from Ian Hayward, Director of Sport)

  • All sports staff began this term with training from Beyond Equality to open dialogue around equity in sport
  • Discussions were broad here and included

- girls' cricket

- girls' access to rugby

- the visibility of rowing

- the perceptions around girls' sport in general

- the potential for a reporting process in sport

- nomenclature of 'minor' sports

- access to football for younger pupils

Mr Hayward is keen to engage with a group of interested parents around sport in general, please do complete this form with your contact details if you would like to be involved.

Pupil Personal Development (from Richard Sims, Joint Head of PPD)

  • Mr Sims and Mrs Wyndham are leading this new department
  • Mr Sims outlined our new programme which encompasses health & wellbeing, the wider world and Relationships and Sex Education
  • This year L4-L5 have one dedicated teacher throughout the year who guides them through the whole course; delivery is through assemblies and tutor groups from M5 and plans are in place to expand this
  • Parents agreed that they have appreciated the communications shared termly around the content taught and that it is important for parents to be aware of topics the school is covering
  • PPD is highlighted in the new newsletter and guidance for discussions at home are offered
  • The Safer Schools resource was highlighted as a useful platform which the school are considering

Mr Sims and Mrs Wyndham are keen to engage with a group of interested parents around RSE and other personal development themes, please complete this form with your contact details if you would like to be involved.

Equity Diversity and Inclusion (From Amber Scott, EDI Officer)

  • Amber highlighted the work she has been doing so far with pupils and staff, including pupil-led interest groups, 1:1 conversation, assemblies, PPD sessions, staff training, building links with external organisations and strategic planning
  • Parents were encouraged to report concerns to the school and to be aware that our approach is always that we will 'never do nothing' if a concern of any kind is raised.

We take very seriously the goal we share with parents and guardians to support pupils throughout their journey with us, and whilst we plan to facilitate a termly Parent Forum moving forward, we will also be sharing a parent survey in the coming weeks to gather feedback on a more individual level.

Our next Forum will be held on Wednesday 7 June at 17:00, we hope that you will be able to join us, please do look out for details of our next agenda.
