Exam tips worth knowing from Mrs Valpied, Head of Welfare

As exam season approaches, Mrs Valpied, our Head of Welfare, has five top tips for revision which are outlined below.

1. To start with, make a realistic revision schedule. Break down what you need to learn into manageable chunks and make sure to mix up your subjects which helps you to stay focussed.

2. Find a revision style that suits your learning type. Some people prefer quiet spaces but others like a bit of background noise. You could also try revising with a friend, but don’t let them distract you!

3. Looking at past exam papers is an important aspect of revision as it helps to familiarise yourself with the style and type of questions that tend to come up. Try testing yourself in timed conditions as well.

4. Make sure to take regular rest-breaks, roughly every 45-60 minutes. Also, make sure to reward yourself after you finish your revision session. In addition, do some physical exercise which helps to make your mind off work and keep you positive.

5. The final tip relates to sleeping and eating well. A balanced diet is vital for your health, high-fat, high-sugar and high-caffeine foods leading to irritability, hyperactivity and altered moods. Do try to make healthy food and drink choices when studying. Also, eating well on exam days is vital for your brain to be on top form, so plan your food and ensure you are well nourished on those important days. Good sleep improves thinking and concentration, so having a good night of sleep ahead of exams will also benefit you. Allow half an hour or so to wind down between studying and going to sleep.

Mrs Valpied says, “being well prepared for exams is the best way to overcome anxiety and stress, plus it gives you the best chance of achieving your potential.”

Mrs Valpied also stressed that if you are feeling stressed, reach out for help. Talk to someone you trust like a family member, teacher or friend. Remember you can also visit the Wellbeing Hub or email Mrs Valpied (gvalpied@norwich-school.org.uk) and your tutor or Head or House are also on hand for support.
