Chorister update with Helen Reynolds, Tutor to the Senior School Choristers

The start of the new Academic Year has been a busy one for the Boy Cathedral Choristers. This half term has seen them sing their usual pattern of Choral Evensong as well as preparing for the magnificent concert which took place on Thursday 5th October when they sung with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a Royal Celebration Concert at Norwich Cathedral

There are 20 Boy Choristers serving at present. On average the Boys serve 5 years as a Chorister, 3 whilst they are at the Lower School and then in the L4 and U4 at the Senior School. I am delighted as Tutor to the Senior School Choristers to be looking after 7 incredibly talented and dedicated boys. With 4 Cathedral Choristers in L4; Harry Henson (V), Sam Irvine (P), Austin Symonds (S) and Oscar Zhang (E). They are already established voices within the Choir.  Our U4 Choristers are; William Lambert(N) and Isaac Schaad ( R ) with George Blyth (P) serving as Head Chorister.

With the welcoming of the new Choristers we also say farewell to leaving Choristers. In July 2 U4 Choristers; Teddy Curtis (N) and Rupert Glover-Darke (P) completed their time as Choristers. Their leaving was marked during the Valediction Evensong when the Dean blessed them. Mr Clover and Mrs Platten presented the leaving Choristers with the Cathedral Ex-Chorister tie. Pins were presented to the leaving Girl Choristers. This was followed by our farewell gathering in the Cloisters. The Master of Music presented the leaving Choristers with their hymn books. These were in varying states of repair! Teddy and Rupert were a delight to support during their time as Choristers and I was very privileged to be their Tutor. For them it was a sad occasion as had both loved their time as Choristers, enjoying the wonderful singing in the Cathedral and the camaraderie of being a Chorister.

I am delighted that we have a new tradition within the Boy Choristers in that they are presented with the school Chorister tie by the Head during assembly at the start of term. The boys eagerly wait to receive these at the start of term and wear them with pride. The photograph below shows this year’s Norwich Cathedral Senior Boy Choristers wearing their ties with the Head.

The Choristers are a group of incredibly talented and dedicated pupils who are drawn from the younger years within our school community. Each morning I have the privilege of joining them in their music world. The standard of music which they perform at such a young age never ceases to amaze me. It is a real joy to listen to them.

I look forward to the year ahead supporting our wonderful Boy Choristers as their Tutor.
