Back to Books! - Meet the Sixth Form Book Group

In this new series, we will be meeting each of the various book groups throughout the Norwich School, with words from staff and pupils about how these groups have shaped their reading habits and furthered their love of reading.

Today, we hear from 3 members of the Sixth Form Book Group; Amelia Braidwood, L6, and Cara Feeny, L6, and Grace Yeo, L6, to get an insight into what happens in Book Group!

When and why did you join Book Group?

Amelia: “I joined Book Group in Lower 4 way back in 2018. I joined because I joined because it sounded like a fun club, I loved reading, and my friends were also wanting to go!”

Cara: “I joined in L5 because I really enjoyed reading and discussing the books I have read”

Grace: “I joined in L4. I remember joining the reading group to find more books to read and connect with fellow book readers that I had not spoken to before. Since joining in L4, I believe that my experience has been much more diverse in the sense that I can enjoy books from all genres.”

What’s the best thing about coming to weekly meetings?

Amelia: “I really like the relaxed atmosphere to just talk about what we have been reading and our general reading habits; the book-based activities are also fun as well!

Cara: “It’s a great way to socialise with my friends and other people who enjoy reading as much as I do! The meetings fit us and change as our reading habits shift. As our workload increases, the expectation for us to be reading as regularly as before is dropped and we get to chat about our favourite books and have fun!”

Grace: “The benefit of weekly meetings is that it provides a place of ‘sanctuary’ during the week. In L6, it allows me time to unwind and relax with my closest friends whilst providing good book recommendations for future reference. Another highlight of having weekly meetings is that the Sixth Form Group meeting is always held on a Friday, providing a small break before returning to lessons.”

Has being in the Book Group changed your reading habits at all? If so, how?

Amelia: “Reading group has given me some really good reading recommendations over the years, expanding the variety of genres I read. This has been great as it means that I have read books I never would have picked up!”

Cara: “When recommendations are made that I am interested by I will try and read them as soon as possible so I can bring my own opinions about the book to the next meeting.”

Grace: “Reading group has expanded my scope of reading and has also helped reading become a part of my day-to-day life.”

Have you got any reading recommendations you would like to share?

Amelia “The Fountains of Silence and/or Good Omens”

Cara: “One of my all-time favourite series for those around 5th form is the Scythe Series but the Percy Jackson books will always be my favourite!”

Grace: “All the Light We Cannot See, The Three Body Problem”

In the photos below we can see the Sixth Form Book Group eagerly preparing for the Norwich School Doors Trail on World Book Day!

Throughout the Senior School 36 doors will be decorated in the theme of a certain book and it is up to pupils to follow the trail and win a sweet treat! (Whilst hopefully finding some book recommendations along the way!)
