An Engaging Independent Project Evening for all

In October we were delighted to invite visitors, parents, and pupils to our Independent Project Evening, organised by Mr Grant (Head of History and the Independent project). The Evening consisted of twenty-two presentations by pupils in Upper Sixth, covering a range of topics from Crypto Currency to Original Films, and made for an incredibly educational and informative evening.

Bibi Boyce, who presented ‘To what extent does Greek astronomy deserve to be known as the predominant form of early astronomy?’ speaks about how the evening went:

‘I thoroughly enjoyed the Independent Project evening - as both a presenter and an audience member. Being able to show a room full of people what I had been working on for the past year or so was incredibly rewarding and I think it was the best way to bring my project to a close. Then, seeing what my peers had done made it even better! It's so interesting to see what makes people passionate and I was over the moon to be involved in such an academic (and creative) event.’

We also spoke to parent Jonathan Pearson about his impression of the evening:

The newly revamped Independent Project evening held at Norwich School was an absolute revelation. My son and I attended, and it exceeded our best expectations.

We enjoyed choosing our four lectures beforehand from the varied and eclectic mix of talks on offer. The four we attended did not disappoint. The talks were meticulously researched and beautifully presented. We enjoyed the variation in presenting styles, and the inciteful questioning afterwards really put the young presenters through their paces. It is a great introduction for them to life beyond Norwich School at University and in the world of work.

Overall, it was a professionally run and very engaging evening. Congratulations to the pupils involved for all their hard work and to the school for putting on such a showcase of intellectual rigour. More of the same next year PLEASE!

‘It was wonderful to see so many people come to see and hear what the U6 had produced for their projects. The diversity of the presentations was testament to the flexibility of the Independent Project programme: from Jack Parfitt’s film to George Bowyer’s investigation of veterinary medicine in the military, and May Maclennan’s thoughtful analysis of politics and identity in the Arctic region to name just three. The pupils should be extremely proud of their efforts – every project, from initial idea to realisation was driven by the pupils themselves – and I hope the event inspired those lower down the school to ponder what they might do when they join the Sixth Form.’ Mr Grant Head of Independent Project.
