"Eight years ago, I had to leave my job to care for my daughter and navigate the unfathomable tribulations of the UK’s education system. Now, with award-winning BFI "Future Producer" and Educational Mentor Natalie Lauren, they’re making a short film that shows the human cost of education policies on real children and parents: starting with the pressure caused by inappropriate fines and prosecution threats on a mother with a young daughter who isn't coping in school.
To be clear: this isn’t about parents taking children on holiday. It’s about families of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) fighting to access statutory support: children struggling with Emotion-Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA) waiting months or years for Assessments or Care Plans, which are sometimes not ever met or changed without warning. In the meantime parents are faced with increasing fines and threatened with court action. An experience which is terrifying and (in our opinion) cruel, unnecessary, and not what the law was designed for.
We're going to make a film that all SEND families can point to and say “This is what I’ve been dealing with!”, because this isn't just my story; it's the story of thousands of SEND parents and their children across the UK and beyond.
Jo has written an exceptional film script that distills all of this down into one mother and her daughter's experience of this system. It’s success so far has been unprecedented: not only has it been on Shortlists and Finalists at known film festivals, but it has also been endorsed by an incredible array of world-leading Academics, Paediatricians, Journalists, Teachers, Lawyers, and Authors.
Please join us on this journey to raise awareness and improve the lives of thousands of SEND children and their families. The momentum we've built has already given this film a life of its own, and your support will be integral to its success. Thank you!"
