MAKING MUSICIANS CONCERT
July 4, 2023
Making Musicians - the scholarship enrichment scheme headed by Caroline Speca officially starts in the senior school. However, Mrs Speca is always keen to inspire musicians in the Lower School as soon as possible. Over this academic year pupils at the LS have attended recitals given by senior school pupils in the Cathedral.
They have also had visits from Music Scholars from the Senior School - demonstrating and answering questions about various instruments.
The evening of 3 July was a continuity of this close relationship as string players from U1 to U6 performed together in the School Chapel. Together with professional musicians, pupils played The Comet Stone by Orkney based composer Jeff Moore. The piece is inspired by an Orkney legend and the music features fabulous folk tunes which really suit all standards of string players. The sound created when all 37 performers played together was wonderful and pupils, young and old were really energised by the performance.
'What a fab concert this evening! I loved that piece, it sounded glorious. All that tricky time keeping! What an amazing opportunity for (pupil) to play in that orchestra. She came out buzzing about the sound they made.' - Parent
After The Comet Stone, Millie Clark, ON, treated the audience to a performance of Vivaldi flute concerto op.10 no.3. Then celebrated violinist Ishani Bhoola played more Vivaldi - The Four Seasons, accompanied by professional string players and NS pupil Adam Chillingworth. What an experience for Adam to play with this ensemble.
Here's what Mrs Speca had to say about the evening
"what a wonderful evening from start to finish. I am delighted that pupils could perform alongside such talented professionals, be inspired by listening to Millie, and be treated to a virtuosic performance by Ishani and the other musicians. It was a fabulous way to end this years music making"
