DINNER CELEBRATES SPORTS SUCCESS
July 4, 2023
Only the second ever Senior Sports Dinner took place on Tuesday evening, where pupils who had represented the school in a competitive fixture this year were invited to celebrate over dinner in a marquee at the Lower School. An impressive 157 guests (including pupils, parents and staff) gathered together to enjoy a very tasty buffet and although it was a very stormy and rainy evening, there was a lovely sporting atmosphere inside the marquee.
The evening began with a speech from the Head reflecting on cultures and how much our pupils can learn from one another across different disciplines and then Jemima Watson and Reuben Hollis shared their views on the impact that being involved in school sport has had on them; they talked about their coaches and how much they valued the sort of the relationships with them over the years, along with the other things that they'll remember.
Over the course of the evening, we heard from pupil and staff representatives from most of our main sports, beginning with hockey (Jemima Watson and James Cross) and ending with cricket (James Cross and Livi Hill) - and including rugby (Pieter De Lange and Reuben Hollis), netball (Octavia Udy), rowing (Christian and Florence Carter and Maisie Humphrey) and a few words about the recent sailing success from George Scholfield. Olivia Elverson had prepared a memory board which was on display throughout the evening where she'd asked each Upper 6 pupil to write down a memory from their time at the school and there were many award winners for each of the sports.
The evening also gave an opportunity for us to say thank you and goodbye to Head of Rugby: Mr Moran and Sports Teacher: Mr Steward and to wish them well in their new positions. We also congratulated Debbie Conway on taking over as Head of Rowing next term.
Mr Hayward wrapped up the evening by summarising all that had been achieved in sport this year, including best wishes for those U6 pupils who will be leaving us, along with his excitement for what next year can bring for all of the younger sports players in the room.
