Lower 6 Chemists Take On the Analyst Competition
May 5, 2026
On Tuesday 5 May, 24 Lower 6 chemists took part in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s School’s Analyst competition. The willing volunteers organised themselves into teams of 3, to take on 3 complex analytical experiments set by the organisers.
It seems that a pharmacist has been unexpectedly taken ill and foul play is suspected! The teams used a back titration to analyse coffee samples in case of enhanced levels of caffeine, determined which lipstick had been smeared on the victim’s collar by thin layer chromatography, and used gravimetric analysis to find the fat content of samples of hand cream.
Pupils have submitted the results of their analysis to the organisers for marking and we will find out in a few weeks which team of budding forensic investigators did the best. If one of our teams was the best in the region, they will be invited to the national final later in the year.
