Lottie Morey, Nutritionist from Thomas Franks Catering, Addresses Pupils On The Importance of A Balanced Diet
May 1, 2024
On Wednesday 1 May, Nutritionist, Lottie Morey, from Thomas Franks Catering addressed pupils on the importance of maintaining a balanced diet and how our school lunches contribute to that!
The main points she addressed in the assembly are as follows;
- What we put on our plate is important! Food is not only needed physiologically for energy, gaining nutrients for development and growth but also socially connecting to culture and bringing people together. It is to be enjoyed!
- We need a balanced diet, achieving all food groups. A variety of foods is key to obtaining all the nutrients our body needs.
- We eat with our eyes so make sure there is colour on your plate. We can get this through fruit and vegetables which are rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals. These are great for our mental and physical health.
- Be open to trying new foods – It’s okay if we don’t like the same foods, we all have different palettes, however look to try new foods prepared in different ways as you may like them.
- It is key to make healthy food choices to nourish our bodies so we can perform our best at school. The wonderful school lunch hall offers delicious healthy balanced meals as well as a bright colourful salad bar, to fuel up after a morning of learning or prepare for an afternoon of physical activity.
At lunch time, the catering team alongside Lotte Morey set up a smoothie bike for pupils to try out! The idea of the smoothie bike was to encourage pupils to ask questions relating to nutrition whether that is related to sport, health or even dieting in or out of school.
The team made over 100 smoothies on the bike with bananas, apple juice, yoghurt and blueberries and had many interesting conversations with both pupils and staff.
