L6 AND U6 ART AND DESIGN SCHOLARS VISIT EDINBURGH
September 27, 2022
This September our L6 and U6 Art and Design scholars had the opportunity to fly up to Edinburgh to visit local galleries, museums, studios and churches.
Head of Art and Design, Ian Passam, led them on a wonderful tour of exhibitions including the Scottish Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, City Art Centre, Fruitmarket Gallery, Stills Gallery, Talbot Rice Gallery, Surgeons Museum, Modern One & Two, and the Alison Watt Altarpiece in Old St Paul's Church. In addition, the pupils enjoyed walks around the city and a visit to an artist's studio, and despite the busy itinerary, there was even a little free time for shopping. In the evenings the group enjoyed a yummy pizza and a visit to the cinema to watch See How They Run.
Mr Passam reported how wonderful it was to see both year groups get so much out of the visit.
Comments from the L6:
‘Edinburgh was a really great way of getting to know all the other scholars as well as expanding knowledge on a variety of design mediums - we all had a great time and didn’t want to go home at the end!!’
‘I particularly enjoyed the architecture and art found all around the city as well as the National gallery of Scotland and the National Gallery of modern art. Two of my favourite works being ‘Bachelorette’ by France-Lise McGurn and ‘Seated nude: Study for Une Baignât’ by Georges Seurat. From the variety of galleries and exhibitions visited over our stay I have drawn and curated a lot of inspiration and ideas I hope to translate into my own work.’
‘The trip to Edinburgh was an amazing opportunity, in particular I enjoyed going to the art galleries, which deepened my appreciation of art and its history. I especially enjoyed the Royal Scottish Academy, one of my favourite paintings was “Moutons A L’abreuvoir” by Charles Jacque; I really enjoyed looking at this picture because of its interesting use of texture and its close attention to detail.
The architecture in Edinburgh was stunning and it felt inspiring to be surrounded by such striking buildings. I found it particularly interesting to see such fine examples of Medieval and Georgian architecture as I am hoping to become an architect in the future.’
‘It was especially interesting to see how much art varied over time even within the same city, I especially enjoyed seeing more contemporary multidisciplinary work like film and sculpture, it was also amazing to see Edinburgh's architecture and get to know people doing art in school better.'
Thank you to everyone who attended and to Mr Passam for organising such a fruitful trip!
