June Making Musicians Delights the Cathedral
June 12, 2025
On Thursday 12 June, Jacey Ng and Melissa Hawkings performed an excellent Making Musicians recital in the Cathedral. Melissa shares her experience below...
I had a great time performing a 20 minute recital alongside Jacey Ng in the Cathedral. I had the privilege of being accompanied by Brenda Blewett on piano, and it was amazing to play in such an atmospheric venue. I played pieces by Beethoven, Strauss and York Bowen, composers from vastly different eras, which I chose as I hoped to highlight the variety of horn repertoire, and how it has evolved through time. The York Bowen sonata was definitely my favourite to play, as it is very energetic and uses techniques unique to the horn, such as handstopping. This is a technique where you cover the bell of the horn with your hand to create a tinny, muted effect. Although I was nervous at first, It was a joy to share this music with the audience.
Compared to my last recital in the Cathedral (November 2023), I was able to enjoy the music a lot more this time, as I felt more technically secure and comfortable while performing. It is through the Making Musicians programme that I have been able to develop my performance skills, which I am very grateful for. I look forward to performing in the future!
