Heritage Open Days 2024
September 13, 2024
In September 2024 we were delighted once again to open up our site as part of the long-standing national Heritage Open Day scheme. Norwich School is extremely fortunate to be located in a site rich in heritage and historical interest, and we were pleased to participate in this initiative as part of our commitment to fostering the cultural life of our great city and county.
The Chapel enjoys rare Scheduled Monument status and is in the heart of the Cathedral Conservation Area. This beautiful medieval building dates back to 1316, has proud regal connections, interesting graffiti, two moving war memorials and windows, original corbels and an organ with a colourful back story. The air raid shelter enjoyed brief but busy use throughout World War II before being closed up, only to be re-opened by is in 2019. The shelter’s long brick tunnels are a hidden gem under the playground.
The Chapel was open for multiple drop-in sessions which proved popular amongst a mix of curious members of the public, as well as pupils and parents, alumni and even international visitors. The air raid shelter was open for six sell-out sessions lead by our resident expert Ady Marsham. Staff members Jonathan Pearson and Sonja Mitchell were on hand throughout to answer questions.
We look forward to enabling the public to access our site for free again next year.
