With an orchestra of over 70 musicians and a 130-strong choir, the roof of St Andrew’s Hall was well and truly raised at the annual Norwich School Choral Society concert on 8 March.



This is a unique event in the school’s burgeoning musical calendar, featuring adult members of the long-established Norwich School Choral Society joining forces with the pupil choirs, and adult members of Norwich Baroque accompanying our pupil orchestra. Together, this ensemble filled the stage and the entirety of the tiered seating behind, producing a musical spectacular that thrilled our large and appreciative audience who had braved snow to support.

The programme kicked off with Vivaldi’s rousing Magnificat in G Minor, followed by pupil Adam Chillingworth (U6B) who led Bach’s stunning and plaintive Harpsichord Concerto No 5. Before the interval we had the privilege to be the first to hear the world premiere of A Mass for Planet Earth written and conducted by our very own Mr Weeks. It was a work of great lyrical beauty, a smorgasbord of Gaelic tones, folk dance motifs and Indian rhythms, and (in typical Mr Week’s fashion) the awe and drama of crashing percussion. After the interval, Mrs Walton conducted arguably Fauré’s best-known work, the moving and hauntingly beautiful Requiem in D Minor.

A range of pupils and ON soloists showcased their fantastic vocal talent throughout. In all, the evening provided great spectacle. It reaffirmed what joy live music on a grand scale brings as well as the rich vein of musical talent to be found in Norfolk.

Commenting on the success of his premiere, Mr Weeks commented:

"What a thrill it was to hear your music come to life on stage with such a large orchestra and choir. It was the best version that I had heard them perform so both pupils and adults certainly rose to the occasion! I real highlight for me was seeing the confidence and leadership of our pupil soloists, not least Adam Chillingworth who articulated the Bach Concerto with Norwich Baroque superbly. Many thanks to all involved for all their hard work over the last few months."

Pupil Suzie Knock (U6P), sub principal first violinist, added:

“Wednesday night’s joint Choral Society and Chapel Choir concert was enhanced by outstanding members of Norwich Baroque and Gateway Players. Not only did we sing Vivaldi’s Magnificat and Faure’s requiem, but we also had privilege of being involved in the World premiere of Mr Weeks’ ‘Mass for planet Earth’ which truly is a masterpiece. It was an incredible opportunity to play with professional players in the orchestra, especially given their advice to create a more historically informed performance, both in concert-day rehearsals and a masterclass before. I will be sure to use these vital skills when playing Baroque music in the future. It was inspiring to be surrounded by so many talented musicians, with a particular highlight being the superb Bach Harpsichord Concerto performed by Upper 6 student Adam Chillingworth with Norwich Baroque players. This concert showcased the plethora of talent in the wider school community.”
