Art History Trip to Norwich Castle Exhibition
January 16, 2025
The exhibition ‘JMW Turner and changing visions of landscape’ was a hugely beneficial insight into Turner’s lesser known but beautiful paintings and other artists who were inspired by him, such as John Sell Cotman and Kuffin Williams. We completed written work based on finding specific pieces and linking them to our course and exploring Turner’s passion for nature further and seeing the paintings in person and gaging the scale of them highlighted his skill. The most interesting part for me was reading all the passages beside the different sections of paintings regarding multiple areas or themes in Turner’s work, like how his faith contributed to his art (his last words being ‘The sun is God’) and the development of his style as he grew older and his eyesight deteriorated. We felt we had a new insight and a fresh reminder about Turner’s work that we could use in our discussions and exams- a brilliant opportunity!
