A Celebration of History and Culture
September 18, 2026
As part of the national Heritage Open Day scheme, Norwich School was delighted to open its Air Raid Shelter, Crypt and school Chapel to visitors this month.
Norwich School is extremely fortunate to be located on a site rich in heritage and interest and, for many years, we have been delighted to participate in Norfolk’s Heritage Open Day programme.
Once again, this September, we opened our Chapel and our Air Raid Shelter to the public. The beautiful medieval Chapel is a Scheduled Monument and dates back to 1316. It has proud regal connections, interesting graffiti and windows, two war memorials and an organ with a fascinating back story. Many visitors were surprised to know such a grand Chapel is part of the school site, used by orchestral and choral groups, tutor groups and classes on a daily basis. It remains a consecrated space, offering the chance for weddings, memorial services and confirmations to be held there, and can also be hired by anyone interested in a unique venue for a recital, book launch or meeting.
Visitors were encouraged to visit the Crypt below, a former Charnel Crypt (1316 – 1551). It originally housed unearthed bones, but is now an attractive art gallery, hosting numerous exhibitions throughout the year, details of which can be found here Crypt Gallery. Currently, local artists Emma Wilkinson and Denise Canderton are exhibiting ‘Friends For All Seasons’, a show of fine original artworks on display until Monday 28 September 2026.
The Air Raid Shelter beneath the playground offers a totally unique opportunity to descend underground and into the history of the Cathedral Close during the height of the bombing raids of World War II. Tours are hosted by Ady Marsham, the School’s electrician and historian. Having worked at Norwich School since the 1980s, Ady knows every inch of this historic site and is a wonderfully informative guide.
A recent visitor to the bomb shelter told us: 'Thanks to the Heritage Open Day I was given the rare opportunity to go below the playground at Norwich School and visit the Air Raid Shelter - something I didn't know existed until quite recently. It was an amazing experience and gave me some idea of what it would have been like down there back in wartime.'
We offer heartfelt thanks to all those who paid us a visit.
If you 'd like to visit us in 2027, please keep your eyes peeled for booking links on the Heritage Open Day website. We look forward to welcoming you.
Protecting our precious and historic site is a key responsibility for Norwich School. As 21st century custodians of a fascinating medieval legacy, our commitment to public benefit and the vibrant culture of our great city is a key tenet of life at Norwich School.
