WHAT ARE WE DOING TO MARK WORLD MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY?
October 10, 2022
Today is World Mental Health Awareness Day and here at Norwich School we have a host of activities taking place throughout the week to mark this important day, including:
- Tutorial activities to make sure our pupils know what is going on
- We have a huge banner on the school gates, to remind everyone what an important day it is.
- Every pupil is being encouraged to wear an item of green either today or on Home Clothes Day on Friday to show their support
- There is a board outside the Wellbeing Hub where people can post messages of hope / dreams
- Our pastoral prefects are hosting a special assembly tomorrow
- Pupils can get a world mental Health Day Pin from any of the pastoral prefects, the Wellbeing Hub or from 71a through a donation, raising money for Mental Health Awareness.

We also interviewed Lizzie Johnstone, teacher in charge of peer supporters to find out why World Mental Health Day is such an important date in the school calendar…
Why is it important that we celebrate World Mental Health Day at Norwich School?
This year the World International Health Organisation named the theme for the day ‘make mental health and well-being for all a global priority’, and here at Norwich School we want to make mental health and wellbeing a priority not only today but all year, every year.
With events and sources of information we can change how we approach things to do with mental health, so we will ensure that there are other events on throughout the school year which highlight that. This can be seen in how we have changed the way prefect roles have been structured by introducing the new role for pastoral prefects. This makes mental health and wellbeing a priority within the prefect body allowing students to receive mental health and wellbeing training along with safeguarding training.
Creating Ambassadors of mental health and wellbeing within the student body who can then extend their teaching to M5 Peer Supporters and other students.
How can we be mindful of the mental health of others?
The key thing to keep in mind is that you never truly know what someone is going through, with regards to others' mental health and wellbeing or what is happening for them within their home, so you should always treat everyone with kindness.
How can we educate students and staff about mental health?
For students, we share articles and information through tutorials. There is also a pupil personal development programme which is taught from L4-L5 and this can also be continued as extracurricular for other higher years, through peer supporters and pastoral prefects. This programme oversees the scheduling of talks, tutorials and assemblies.
For staff we offer the opportunity to get Mental Health First Aid training through an external professional and this information and training can then be passed on to pastoral prefects and peer supporters.
