Sparkling conversation with famous Royal Academician

31 May 2023

On a beautiful, sunny evening over the late May Bank Holiday week-end, we were delighted to welcome back on site the Norfolk Contemporary Arts Society (n-cas). This talk formed part of our long-established programme of regular, external lectures at Norwich School delivered by partner organisations. This was an extra special occasion as it was a highlight of the long-established Norfolk and Norwich Festival programme for the creative arts in our region. Norwich School was proud to be associated with such a prestigious event in the city.

A packed audience of festival goers, n-cas members, staff and ONs were in the Blake Studio to hear the Barbican’s charismatic Artistic Director and former BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz in conversation with über-talented London-based artist Rana Begum RA. Accompanied by Rana’s beautiful slide deck and enlivened by Will’s amusing anecdotes, these two leading lights in the arts’ world delighted their audience for over 90 minutes. Under the headings of light, ambiguity, abstraction, colour and space, Will led a wide-ranging discussion about Rana’s extensive body of works that have been exhibited round the world. Discussion included challenges posed by gender and ethnicity during her career, and the influences of her proud Islamic upbringing on her unique and original style. For more, see: Visual Artist | Rana Begum.

We have enjoyed a fantastic line-up of n-cas talks this academic year, welcoming to our site an eclectic and dynamic group of local and nationally-recognised artists. We are proud to act as the host site for n-cas, helping foster the creative arts scene in Norfolk.
