Quality, talent and intensity on show from 'Making Musicians'

05 May 2023

‘Making Musicians’ forms part of the school's long-standing and highly respected programme of music enrichment affording Music Scholars the valuable opportunity to perform in front of an engaged and supportive external audience, whilst offering a free lunchtime concert of the highest quality to our audience. A large audience of parents, ONs, pupils, staff and external visitors in the Chapel were treated to a memorable recital on 4th May 2023.

M5 pupil Kyriel Fynn was first on stage to perform on his clarinet, with stalwart Brenda Blewitt accompanying on the piano. He performed with great aplomb and composure the lyrical Brahms Sonata No 2 followed by a very lively Sonatina by British composer Malcolm Arnold. His performance demonstrated maturity and great expressivity.

This was followed by the wonderful Almary String Quartet: L6 pupils Rosemary Zhang and Daniel Cracknell on violin, Alice Platten on viola and Finnian Smith (U6) on cello. This was a real class act! The ensemble performed the astonishing and fiendishly difficult Shostakovich String Quartet no 8. With admirable concentration etched on every face throughout the piece’s five continuous movements, the drama and intensity of their interpretation was simply breath-taking, whilst the acoustics sounded excellent in the school’s magnificent Chapel. It is a relief that three of the four will still be sixth formers for another academic year to treat us again to such musical excellence.

It was a joy to see so much talent on display and to brighten our day. Grateful thanks to all our performers.

These daytime Making Musicians concerts are free and all are welcome. Details of all the upcoming cultural offerings at school this term can be found here: https://www.norwich-school.org.uk/about-us/publications/at-close-quarters/
