Norwich School's Language Leaders putting their skills to use in the community

25 July 2023

Sara Bertea and Sophie Bush have been Norwich School's Language Leaders for French this year. Every week throughout the year, as part of their Community Service programme, they have supported a class with their French language skills. They have stepped up brilliantly to interact with the younger pupils and to help them improve their language levels. In June, they volunteered their time to go and teach at a state primary school. Sophie tells us more:

"Studying French A level and having a natural passion for languages, I volunteered to teach in the Norwich Primary Academy with Sara! We visited the school in the afternoon, where we then delivered three French lessons on food to two year 4 classes and a year 5 class. Each lesson commenced with an interactive presentation and worksheet, followed by a snap card game and finished with a round of bingo! The pupils were super excited and asked us lots of questions. We filtered round giving individual help to the pupils which felt rewarding being able to reach them on a personal level. We hope the classes enjoyed our lesson!"

Chris Li and Jamie Ng were the year's Language Leaders for Chinese. Chris tells us of the experience:

"After teaching Chinese at Lakenham Primary School as one of the languages leaders, I feel honoured and happy to share my country’s language and culture with two groups of energetic young students. They are friendly and enthusiastic about learning different and new things, and all of them are so responsive and smart that they are able to quickly understand Chinese and use it brilliantly. The pupils were undoubtedly curious about the world and asked so many questions, from that I could truly see many shining stars with bright futures right in front of me. Their passion also makes me feel happy about teaching and I would definitely consider this career in my future!"

Well done to all of the Language Leaders for your fantastic work over this year.
