Neurodiversity Champions at Norwich School - Mr Barnes

16 March 2023

As a part of Norwich School’s support of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, the neurodiversity group are interviewing Neurodiversity Champions at Norwich School. Today we talk to Norwich School's always busy Reprographics Technician, Simon Barnes...

What does Neurodiversity Awareness week mean to you personally?

It is an opportunity to highlight this in the same way that we do with some many other awareness weeks. This is an area of life which is far more embryonic in society truly understanding and engaging with it in a healthy way. It also could empower individuals to positively think about their own experiences of life and understand neurodiversity from the individual and community aspect of school and life.

Do you have any Neurodiverse Role Models?

Not role models, but I have certainly found Yo Samdy Sam and Autism from the Inside on youtube really helpful in understanding myself and the implications of my own neurodiversity, and how to move forward with this aspect of me.

What do you want people to know about Neurodiversity?

That it isn't anything to be concerned about, in some ways it can be your superpower. Knowing and understanding yourself better is a positive thing, and that is always something to be embraced.

What is your favourite thing about being Neurodiverse?

I have the ability to notice things that many neurotypicals wouldn't see.
