Lower 4 Pupil Wins Poetry Competition!

08 February 2023

Norwich School Lower 4 pupil, Oscar Lawrence, has won the Secondary School Category for poetry in the Lord Mayor's Poetry Competition with his poem 'Reedbed Delight'.

The theme for the competition was the River Wensum and the competition was split into three categories: Primary School, Secondary School and Adults (18+)

Oscar explained the inspiration behind his poem: “I love wildlife; I love creative writing - why not do a combination of both? The bird I wrote the poem about was the Bearded Reedling, a bird that I have been very privileged to see. The Wensum is an inspirational place, somewhere I often venture to look for wildlife. I loved participating in the competition, and look forward to more writing challenges!”

The poems were judged by the Lord Mayor of Norwich, the Sheriff of Norwich, Caroline Jarrold, Chris Gribble, CEO of the National Centre for Writing, and local poet and author Shannon Clinton-Copeland.

The winner of each category received a £20 Jarrold book voucher and their poem will be printed in the Citizen magazine which is delivered to every household in the city.

Congratulations to Oscar for his brilliant work!
