Leading Artist Will Teather Wows an Appreciative Audience in the Blake Studio

07 March 2024

When next in Tombland, you might notice an attractive new shopfront in the name of ‘Will Teather’. Will is a Norfolk born painter and one of our leading local artists, best known for creating arresting paintings packed with detail, beautiful colours and spectacle, art that cleverly reflects a quirkily subversive imagination.

As part of our series of public talks with local cultural organisations held at Norwich School, on 7 March 2024 we were delighted once again to act as host to the highly respected Norfolk Contemporary Art Society (n-cas).

Will Teather delivered a canter through over 200 sumptuous slides that highlighted his prodigious oeuvre of paintings. Reluctant to be pinned down to just one style, Will took us through how his art has evolved during his 20-year career and some of the recurring leitmotivs in his work. Predominant amongst those were his figurative works that celebrated the carnivalesque and magic realism displayed in some truly breathtaking images. A strong sense of mischief and individual flair permeate all his works, such as how he has “re-mastered” Old Masters in eye-catching and thought-provoking ways. To assist students of NUA and young people in the audience, Will was generous in explaining how he makes a living from the creative arts through canny promotion and the technical side of how he achieves his remarkable effects on canvas. Further details of his stunning catalogue can be found on his website: Will Teather – Artist – it is well worth a look. Will also plans to be in his shop at 12 Tombland every Saturday in March and looks forward to sharing his world with anyone with an interest in painting.

Over refreshments, the appreciative audience of staff, ONs, students, parents and n-cas members were able to interact directly with our speaker. Norwich School was delighted to have hosted an artist of this statue on site.

N-cas has a busy spring ahead, including two other talks lined up on site. These feature nationally renowned artist Cornelia Parker CBE RA due on 23rd April, and Mali Morris RA due on 15th May as part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival (booking required). See: Events — ncas (n-cas.org.uk). All are welcome to these public lectures in the Blake Studio.
