Heritage Open Days are back at Norwich School

08 September 2023

Norwich School is extremely fortunate to be located in a site rich in heritage and interest.

For many years, we have been delighted to participate in Norfolk’s hugely successful Heritage Open Day scheme as part of our varied and long-standing commitment to the cultural life of our great city and county.

This year again we will open the doors of our Chapel to the general public, and you are also cordially invited.

To fit round the school day, opening timings for the Chapel this year are:

Friday 8 September: 11:00 - 12:00
Monday 11 September: 15:00 - 16:00
Wednesday 13 September: 16:00 - 17:00
Friday 15 September: 14:00 - 15:00

Entry is free and there is no need to book ahead, but please be aware there is a series of steep steps to gain entry. The Chapel is accessed off the Upper Close through the porch opposite Nelson’s statue.

Key staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and to offer you a brief historical tour.

The Chapel enjoys Scheduled Monument status and is in the heart of the Cathedral Conservation Area. This beautiful medieval building dates back to 1316, has proud regal connections, interesting graffiti and windows, two moving war memorials and an organ with an interesting back story. If you are curious to find out more, a warm welcome awaits.

The Air Raid shelter in the playground will also be open as part of the Heritage Open Days programme, but this is for pre-booked places only, due to restricted entry numbers, and all slots have been already taken up.

We look forward to seeing you in the school’s Chapel in coming days.
