FemSoc's inspiring assembly at the Lower School ahead of International Women's Day

06 March 2024

FemSoc's Sophie Hough (U6) tells us about the group's trip this week to the Lower School for a special assembly:

"This week, FemSoc is celebrating International Women’s Day, and as part of this, we visited Norwich Lower School to talk to pupils during assembly. Arshia (L6), Emily (L6) and I put together a presentation covering the purpose of the day (which is to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness of sexism, and take action to make the world a fairer place), and this year’s theme, ‘Inspire Inclusion.’

We also spoke to them about women who inspire us. I decided to speak about Greta Gerwig, because of the success of her films and the way she creates such strong female characters for young girls to look up to. Emily spoke about mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, and Arshia about Indra Nooyi, the CEO of Pepsi Co, so we covered quite a range.

We concluded with a quiz, which the Lower School pupils passed with flying colours. While I have given talks about feminism before, it was a great experience to talk to younger children about it, and they seemed to enjoy our assembly too. Hopefully we will have some budding new members of FemSoc when they reach the Senior School!"
