Emily Leason's competition winning shoes to be featured in Norwich Fashion Week event

13 March 2017

Norwich School Art and Design GAP student Emily Leason is to have her printed design worn on Van Dal shoes at Norwich Fashion Week.

Emily entered the competition in November last year and was informed as the overall winner in December. The brief for the competition was to design an A3 repeating print and select a shoe style (a pump, dress court or block heeled court) that will incorporate the design. It was judged on commercial awareness, inspiration and creativity. Emily submitted 250 words with the design, highlighting the aspects that she had incorporated into the print.

The 250 word statement...

"The following design celebrates the vibrancy of colour and lively, distinctive form of tropical plants and flowers. It takes inspiration from the Caribbean, Cuba, the jungle edge, and tropics, indulging in the exotic, fun, modern and uplifting, accentuating the excitement for Spring/Summer 2017.

Through using the pen and wash technique to create the designs I have captured the beautiful depth of tone, character and expression of each component.

The rich colour palette takes inspiration from the tropical rainforest, from the rich greens and blues to the glowing corals. Similarly the colourful streets of Havana, Cuba along with the bright beach huts surrounded by palm trees inspire the daring splashes of colour that make up this print.

Colour distribution and contrast of colour is inspired by Valentino Resort 2017 1-17 with vibrant tropical plants resting against a navy blue background showing off the array of colour spread throughout the design. This defines the design content whilst maintaining sophistication, presenting a playful design with a bold yet calm and elegant repeat pattern suited to both night and day.

The smart yet relaxed style of the Block heeled court shoe will complement my print perfectly, its bold structure enhancing my striking print."

There will be 72 pairs of shoes made by Van Dal and sold in Jarrolds and online at Van Dal. In addition Emily was presented with her own personal pair, complete with printed name inside. A clutch bag has also been made, both of which shall feature at Norwich Fashion Week this week. On Tuesday 14th March 7:30/8pm you can buy a ticket for the Fashion show 'Brasted's and Norwich Cosmetic clinic Designers show', £10 a ticket bought online. They can also be on display Wednesday 15th March at the Open, 'Design and Enterprise day' 10am-4pm. More details are available online.
