This term fourth form pupils were invited to create a piece of artwork responding to the theme of ‘My Norwich-School’. Pupils choose their favourite aspect of school life for their plate designs as shown in just a few of the winning entries below by L4 and U4.
The pupils won the opportunity to work with visiting Potter Heather Griffiths for a day just before half term, where they made clay plates and translated their designs using a traditional method of slip decoration.
As there were so many great designs Mrs Slade worked with some of the L4 on producing a further twenty-five plates.
Below are some thoughts from pupils who attended the event;
Participating in the pottery competition was a lot of fun. I learnt many new skills and explored how to use clay. I like the way that we could experiment with different tools and techniques to make and decorate our plate. Another enjoyable part of the day was using the pottery turntable as it made it easier to paint and shape our designs. Both teachers who were leading the group made the day exciting and fun. I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished plate once it has been fired and glazed.

Today we were working with Mrs Slade and Heather Griffiths the visiting artist, to transfer our plate designs onto ceramics. This took the entire day! Whilst being hard work, it was a fun experience. The highlight of the day was the painting of the slip onto the plate as it was most satisfying to witness the transformation of the brown terracotta clay disk with our designs applied in a range of colour.

We headed to the pottery room to meet Heather, the visiting Potter who was very nice. We started by making our plates which was hard work but fun. After we painted our designs using coloured slips onto the plates, we scratched an outline around our drawings to make them stand out. The highlight was painting our designs because it bought the designs to life. Thank you to Heather as I really enjoyed working with new friends and clay!

The plates will be on display to see next Term!
