A packed audience thrilled by renowned artist Maggi Hambling

27 February 2023

On 20th February a packed Blake Studio at Norwich School comprising pupils, parents, alumni, staff, friends and members of the Norfolk Contemporary Arts Society (N-CAS) were thrilled to welcome in person the internationally renowned artist Maggi Hambling. This talk formed part of our cultural lecture series held on site in partnership with N-CAS.

Maggi was in conversation with Dr Francesca Vanke, Senior Curator and Keeper of Fine and Decorative Art at Norwich Castle Museum. In a wide-ranging interview Maggi shared her love of nature through her works on herons and polar bears as well as the influence of the stunning Suffolk coastline on her work. Conversation also touched on her more abstract art, including her visions of a “happy death” and her sculpture including A Sculpture for Mary Wollstonecraft, A Conversation with Oscar Wilde and (more locally) Scallop (2003). She touched on the controversies that have surrounded all three of these public works. As anticipated, Maggi displayed her colourful character throughout, and the audience was touched by her lifelong vision of painting from the heart and with love. Budding creative students in the audience were urged to sketch every day and never to stop learning, whilst being true to themselves at all times. Over refreshments, the audience was able to meet her in person.

A few reflections on the visit from our appreciative audience:

“For me the endeavour, commitment and honesty of her work and her being as an artist shone through. Her commentary on climate change and what we are doing to our planet was a common theme throughout her work, but for me the wonder of this talk was Maggi reflecting on where, when and why she makes work - Your work has to be your friend, through the tough and the good times, wake up early, record the day as it happens - Draw every day! Solid advice, delivered with sharp wit and a kind authority.”

Andrew Campbell, Norwich School Art Teacher and Head of The Crypt Gallery

“Being able to see Maggi Hambling in conversation was an amazing opportunity. We were all inspired by her powerful paintings that spread awareness about climate change. She showed us and discussed various expressive portraits in response to personal situations she has experienced. We learnt about the connection between the artist and their subject. She gave us advice to draw every day to help keep the creative flow going!”
